reinstalling internet explorer on xp sp2

April 29, 2005

I removed a bunch of spyware from a machine, but it had corrupted IE. Script errors opening Norton Internet Security, couldn’t type in some text boxes e.g., Yahoo! mail logon, and some pages would not display images.
I came across IEFix, but it requires a slipstreamed XP SP2 CD to restore the files. I didn’t have one handy, so I copied the files one by one as it prompted for them from a clean XP SP2 machine. The fix worked like a charm and I will keep these files on a USB key for the future. Here is the list…

from C:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\
* dhtmled.ocx
* hmmapi.dll
* html32.cnv
* iedw.exe
* iexplore.exe
* msconv97.dll
* triedit.dll

from C:\i386\
* WRITE32.WP_
* IEFILES5.IN_
* IEINFO5.OC_
* MSWRD632.WP_
* MSWRD832.CN_
* INSTALL.IN_
