xp system process using 99% cpu

May 2, 2005

Came across a computer with System using 99% of the CPU. All google turned up was Trend Micro’s snafu last week. Using Process Explorer from Sysinternals I looked into what threads were running under the System process and saw usbport.sys hogging all the CPU cycles. I used process of elimination to find which USB Root Hub was causing it by disabling them one at a time. I remember one of the ports not recognizing devices properly in the past. It must have been causing the problem.

I had the same problem, though it seems that all of my usb ports failed at the same time. I just unplugged the damn things and got a pci card with usb for $15.
