google desktop search

May 31, 2005

Google Desktop Search is the most time saving, useful program I have used in a while. Today I was looking for some info from an email that I couldn’t find in Outlook. I typed it into gds and it found it immediately, but not in Outlook. It was a cached webmail page from an old server that we don’t use anymore. The email came in during our transition and never got downloaded into Outlook. Impressive!

It works similar to the locate function in *nix by indexing everything on your PC to provide immediate search results. The index folder (C:\Documents and Settings\{user}\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Google Desktop Search) appears to be just under 500MB and the program itself uses about 8MB while idle.
